A gripping new military drama is on the horizon, and it promises to be a cinematic experience you won’t want to miss. Ron Howard, a director renowned for transforming true stories into unforgettable films, is set to helm Alone at Dawn, a powerful drama produced by Amazon MGM Studios. The film will star Adam Driver and Anne Hathaway, two of Hollywood’s most compelling actors, bringing this extraordinary tale to life.
But here’s where it gets controversial: the story centers on a real-life military hero whose bravery was initially overlooked, sparking a debate about how we recognize valor in combat. Alone at Dawn is based on the book by Dan Schilling and Lori Chapman Longfritz, which recounts the heroic actions of Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman. Years after Chapman fought valiantly to save his comrades, an intelligence officer embarks on a mission to prove Chapman’s heroism, ultimately securing him the Medal of Honor. Interestingly, Schilling, who co-authored the book, also served as a Combat Control Technician, just like Chapman, while Longfritz is Chapman’s sister, adding a deeply personal layer to the story.
Amazon plans to release the film in theaters, under the umbrella of its renewed first-look deal with Imagine Entertainment, the production company co-founded by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. This collaboration has already produced numerous acclaimed films, and Alone at Dawn is set to continue that tradition. The project is a joint effort between Imagine Entertainment, The Hideaway Entertainment, and Thruline Entertainment, with producers Kristy Grisham, William Connor, and Patrick Newall on board. Michael Russell Gunn, who wrote the screenplay, will also serve as executive producer. The script has undergone several revisions, with contributions from Erin Cressida Wilson and Amy Herzog, ensuring the story is both compelling and authentic.
The journey to bring Alone at Dawn to the screen is as remarkable as the story itself. The manuscript sparked a fierce bidding war before being optioned by The Hideaway Entertainment, eventually becoming a New York Times bestseller. After hiring Gunn to adapt the screenplay, The Hideaway partnered with Imagine Entertainment, where Howard was so moved by the narrative that he signed on as director. Wilson was later brought in to refine the script further.
Finding the right lead actor was crucial. Howard chose Adam Driver, an Oscar-nominated actor and former Marine, who has long been interested in military projects but only if the story truly resonated with him. Driver’s military background adds an authentic dimension to his portrayal. Once Driver was secured earlier this year, the search for his co-star led to Anne Hathaway. After meeting with Howard and the producers, Hathaway enthusiastically joined the cast, ready to bring depth and nuance to the film.
Ron Howard’s track record with true-life adaptations is impressive, with hits like Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind—the latter earning him an Oscar for Best Director and Best Picture. His recent work includes Thirteen Lives, which depicted the dramatic rescue of a youth soccer team trapped in a Thai cave, showcasing his skill in handling intense, real-world stories.
Anne Hathaway is currently filming The Devil Wears Prada 2 and has recently completed work on Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. She also stars alongside Jessica Chastain in Mother’s Instinct and has appeared in several other notable films, including Amazon MGM Studios’ The Idea of You, Vertical’s She Came to Me, Focus Features’ Armageddon Time, and the adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel Eileen. Hathaway’s upcoming projects include Mother Mary, directed by David Lowery, and Verity, based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling book. She also wrapped production on Flowervale Street, slated for release in 2026, and is set to reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis in the third Princess Diaries installment.
Adam Driver’s upcoming films include Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother and James Gray’s Paper Tiger. He has received Academy Award nominations for his performances in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. Driver’s extensive filmography features collaborations with legendary directors such as Francis Ford Coppola (Megalopolis), Michael Mann (Ferrari), Ridley Scott (House of Gucci, The Last Duel), Noah Baumbach (White Noise), Leos Carax (Annette), Jim Jarmusch (Paterson), Terry Gilliam (The Man Who Killed Don Quixote), Steven Soderbergh (Logan Lucky), and Martin Scorsese (Silence). He is also widely recognized for his role as Kylo Ren in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Representing Hathaway are CAA, Entertainment 360, and Sloane Offer, while Driver is represented by WME and Robert Offer of Sloane Offer. Michael Russell Gunn is represented by Artists First, WME, and attorney David Fox. Erin Cressida Wilson is represented by CAA, Art/Work Entertainment, and Schreck Rose.
