Bagnaia's Stellar Performance in Sepang MotoGP Qualifies him for Pole Position
Pecco Bagnaia's qualifying performance in the Malaysian Grand Prix was nothing short of spectacular. After a challenging two weekends in Indonesia and Australia, Bagnaia demonstrated his competitive spirit and secured his third MotoGP pole of 2025. Despite his recent struggles, Bagnaia's confidence remained high, attributing his Q1 presence to a lack of a strong Friday performance rather than a decline in overall pace.
In a close battle, Bagnaia narrowly missed the top spot in Q1, finishing second behind Gresini's Fermin Aldeguer. However, he showcased his prowess in Q2, delivering a remarkable 1m57.001s lap time, which proved unbeatable. The pressure was on for Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo, who aimed to secure a second consecutive pole position. Unfortunately, Quartararo faced a setback in the final sector, losing significant time due to a strategic misstep, ultimately settling for fourth place.
The race lineup featured a strong showing by Gresini Ducati, with Alex Marquez and VR46 rider Franco Morbidelli securing third and fourth positions, respectively. Bagnaia's performance solidified his position as a top contender, leaving him with a single soft tyre set for Q2, which he utilized flawlessly.
The race weekend also witnessed a series of incidents and unexpected turns. Yamaha's V4 bike, piloted by Augusto Fernandez, struggled in qualifying, with Fernandez warning about the engine settings compromising performance on Sepang's long straights. KTM's Pedro Acosta encountered a crash at Turn 1 in Q2, starting fifth. Maverick Vinales' stand-in, Pol Espargaro, secured a solid 12th place for KTM.
A bizarre incident occurred during Aldeguer's return to the paddock, resulting in a second crash. Despite the setbacks, Aldeguer qualified sixth, using his spare bike. Honda's Joan Mir and Johann Zarco started seventh and ninth, respectively, while Luca Marini's performance was hindered by Aldeguer's crash, forcing him to settle for 13th place.
Aprilia's dominance in the Australian GP was a stark contrast to their performance in Malaysia. None of its four bikes secured automatic Q2 spots, and the team faced challenges in Q1 as well. The Phillip Island winners, Marco Bezzecchi and Raul Fernandez, will start 14th and 15th, marking Bezzecchi's first Q2 absence since Aragon in June.
