Twilight of the Dead: Romero's Zombie Project in Finances (2025)

The Twilight of the Dead Project: A New Chapter in George A. Romero’s Zombie Legacy

In 2021, a revelation sparked debate among fans: the legendary George A. Romero, who passed away in 2017, had left behind a treatment for the seventh and final installment of his iconic Dead franchise. This follow-up to Day of the Dead, titled Twilight of the Dead, would explore the dark underbelly of humanity through the eyes of the last surviving humans trapped between factions of the undead. The treatment, co-written by Joe Knetter, Robert Lucas, and Paolo Zelati—artists who also worked with Romero on previous projects—was initially teased as a thought-provoking sociopolitical commentary wrapped in genre elements.

Two years ago, it was announced that Twilight of the Dead had secured funding from Roundtable Entertainment, and Session 9 director Brad Anderson was cast to helm the film. Just over a year later, in 2023, Milla Jovovich and Betty Gabriel (from Get Out) were confirmed as leads. However, the film has yet to begin filming, and special effects artist Greg Nicotero, who previously worked on Romero’s Day of the Dead, is set to lead the FX department. Nicotero emphasized that securing financing remains a critical step, stating, ‘The zombies evolve, and this reflects George’s universe—a unique take on zombie storytelling.’

Set on a tropical island, Twilight of the Dead aims to delve into the moral ambiguity of human nature as the last humans navigate a world fractured by the undead. The film’s production team includes Zelati, John Baldecchi, Sarah Donnelly, Stephanie Caleb of Ardvella Entertainment, and Suzanne Romero, Romero’s widow. Executive producers include Dominic Ianno, Alex Dundas, Jason Resnick, Chris Roe, and Luis Riefkohl.

Greg Nicotero, whose career began with Romero’s Day of the Dead and later worked on Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Survival of the Dead, will oversee the visual effects. He described the project as a ‘full circle’ moment, highlighting the evolution of Romero’s zombie themes. When asked about the project’s progress during an interview with Slasher Radio, Nicotero remarked, ‘George’s universe is dynamic—zombies adapt, and this mirrors that intent. It’s unlike anything else out there.’

Romero’s legacy is a central theme for many fans, and the choice of Anderson as director is a point of intrigue. As a longtime fan of Session 9 (watched during a 24-hour horror marathon in 2001), the author eagerly anticipates how Anderson will reinterpret Romero’s vision. The film’s success hinges on securing full financing, a challenge that could redefine the franchise’s future.
